There is some discoloration of the surface, but it fits the Lajos chassis like a glove!

So maybe this will give rise to perhaps other small shells?
Never mind...I just answered my own question.

They call this "Raw Brass" - supposedly there is no polishing, but looking at the roof, it's waaaay too smooth - they "had" to have polished the roof some, but I'm perfectly happy with that.tealplanes wrote: Is this the polished or the regular?

Some of them, yes. The Metal materials do not have the option of movable parts, so things like the Bucyrus would not be an option. Also, handrails/ladders will always be an issue.Mr.JA wrote: So... could your other offerings be made with brass?

This is great! So 3D printing can now print using metals as a medium?

I made some additional updates to the shell such that it should now be accepted in Raw Silver.. they may still not like it for Polished Silver. They were concerned that polishing might remove all the details, but the Raw Silver shouldn't have that problem.

Shapeways 3d prints the item in wax and then use traditional lost-wax casting to produce it in brass or silver. Certain items with very complex internal details would not be producible.
Their steel product is done with a different technology that "glues" beads of steel together and then kiln-fires it to fuse the beads together.
There is yet another technology called Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) that can produce metal objects with the same complexity as FUD, but the energy (electrical) cost is astronomic.. not ready for prime time yet. A laser capable of producing 1700F for several hours at a time is expensive to run

Scott_S wrote: Is there an advantage to the silver shell? In other words, is it easier to paint on or is the major difference more detail in the shell using silver vs. brass? Thanks.
I think we’re talking apples to oranges when discussing polished metal over “raw” metal. Both can have an advantage over the other. Polished “anything” can take paint better for a nice smooth finish, like the long sides of a loco. Raw metal can give a more “rustic” type finish but not necessarily a flat finish. One advantage a Raw metal item can have over a polished one is the fact that fine details are not polished into oblivion during the polishing process. (I believe brass is harder and can hold the details just a bit better than silver.) An advantage polished Sterling Silver can have over a non-polished silver item is to give it the appearance of already being “chromed”, which works out well for automobile bumpers, grilles & hubcaps, etc., but not much use on a locomotive. Personally, I wanted this in Sterling simply for a collector piece.

Yea, what John said. What about an open windows concept, even if the windows needed to lose the upright supports/dividers and go with larger windows? (I'm thinking ventilation for that little engine.)
