Hi Kelley
I did a little checking and here in michigan and most states, the standards are about the same. For a roadway to be able to be classified as an interstate, the drive lane must be a min. of 12 foot wide and can be as wide as 15 foot wide and the side lanes for pull offs must be a min. of 5 feet but can be as wide as 10 feet. Rural roads must be a min. of 10 foot wide on the drive lanes and the side lanes for pull offs must be a min. of 3 feet but can be larger.
As for how long each slab is, that is whatever the contractor wants but my guess would be no more than the width of the lane they are making so a 12 foot lane would be a 12 foot long.
Hope this helps

Kelley,
Lou Sassi in his book "Basic Scenery for Model Railroaders" recommends that old concert slab roads be 25 scale feet long and 10.5 scale feet wide (per lane). So a two lane road (one lane each way) would be 21 scale feet wide. He also recommend 0.020" thick plain white sheet styrene for the roads. Personally I like using 0.030" for my roads. Use Testors Flat Light Aircraft Gray paint for the concrete color then weather with a wash of india ink/70% Isopropyl Alcohol and then gray and black chalks.
Yours,
John

Thanks for the info.. I have a HUGH bottle of Faller street paint. I like the way it looks. I have been experimenting with it on card stock and a fine ink black marker for the tared joints.

Kelley,
On color go with what you like. However I would not recommend card stock for roads. N Scale forum on Trainboard.com had an entire experiment on this and it didn't work out well. www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=104415
