Interesting modeling idea.....

This is a section of the Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal..I hope to model part of it as it is quite unusual and I don't think any model railroad has done it. Trains can run parallel to canal or over it with bridge work and scenery. A couple of things to knote:
1. feeder dam built to control water level in river
2. guard lock to control water level in canal
3.culvert allows water to enter canal at lower level
4. water backing up at lift lock
5. and 6. if water level too high- lockmaster could drain excess through flumes and weirs

What interested me the most was the bridge carrying water- and boats over the river-- and the canal that enters a tunnel into the hillside. Both common to trains- but not often seen with canals and boats.
Note too- the tunnels, bridge and locks are one boat wide and main canal at least two wide- allowing two way traffic.
Another note:: This is good for very early steam and for the most modern diezels--as parts of the canal are preserved and operated today as a National Park.

Fred,

You could easily do that with NSM's canal barges www.thenarch.com/products/erie-canal-barge-z

During the height of the canal traffic- the boats were 90'-95'(4.9" in Z) long--14 1/2 (less than an inch in Z) feet wide- and drew 4 1/2' when fully loaded. Max the locks could accept. Good size for Z-- Looks like the Erie canal boats were much larger-but I might chop and crop the erie boats or scratch.

Shows canal tunnel with walk path (Tow path?) for horses and mules. Tunnel was 3,118 feet long built 1836-1848

Otherwise you may want to model one of the shortest mainline railroads in the world, the Panama Canal Railway, about 45 miles long end to end, build with heavy standards. You just need to find FR Models' F40s that are used to haul double-stack trains (for these you have wide choice with FR Models, Micro-Trains and AZL), as well as a GP9 for MOW. And maybe now SD40-2s, or SD60, I don't remember (for these one may accept the soon to be delivered AZL standard cab SD60s...).

Fred! In "Z" Scale I can see it now with the canal two or three of your Coast Guard Cutters being pulled thru the canal With the F40's. Put in a guide under the water so the ship moves freely and moor the two F40's fwd one Port side and one Starboard Side of the cutter and pull it up the Canal!!!!! :woohoo:   B)

Not sure they ever launched that in Albuquerque. Got it inflated one year, but needs nearly dead calm wind to fly. Has it ever gotten off the ground?

Anyone interested in a Maersk Alabama? Not that big a ship at 508' length overall, and 70' beam.

Pete,
I might be. at 2.3' long it would look really impressive while not too gigantic to carry.

This would be a good choice with the upcoming movie about her.

This is the insert into the cargo holds that could make a waterline model or full hull model, look like the containers are in deep stowage.

The "containers" in hold are heavy foto copy paper. The ones on the sides indicate the hold still has boxes to discharge from the wings. The bottom of the hold has copies of the Tops of containers, indicating there are additional levels of containers below water line.
Walt- all the dark blue containers are either P&O or Hanjin..No CSX
