Conifer Trees First Announcement

The CCRR Northern Division conifer trees have come to their useful life in my layout room. I have close to 2000 trees on the layout. Normally Loren and I sell these trees for around $1.40 per tree. I am selling mine $.50 per tree. If you purchase 500 or more trees the price will be $.40 ie. 500 trees for $200. If you are interested let me know via this thread. Sorry Loren! $.60 to you. We knew this day was coming. Pity the poor spotted owls, tree huggers, and pot growers who hide out in the Northern Div. Looks like they will be homeless.

Don't apologize for the low price on your trees. And guys, better snap these up while you can because when they are gone, I'm raising my prices to $100.00 a tree. See that way Jim I only have to sell one a day.....kind of like vitamins.

Really guys, every single tree looks different than the rest. Mommy nature never made two alike so variety is definitely the spice of any forested land. Folks will immediately notice your trees and how they look 'somehow different'.

It's true that our home grown variety is more expensive than the bulk pack of look alike trees, but hey, you want quality man.......buy the trees.

Jim will throw in the squirrels, bark beetles, and owls that are slow to take flight when he cuts them down.

Jim, you must have planted these with very soft glue if you can remove them easily.
On some of my early plantation planting, I used CA. Those suckers will withstand 300 mph hurricane winds.

Joe D'Amato once took a picture of me blowing the dust off my large forested end module using a leaf blower. They bend, but they don't break.

A little side note on Jim's varied layouts. For those who are just coming on board with Z scale, you may not know the history of Jim's creative proclivity involving layouts. This guy can crank out scenery pretty darn fast by anyone's measure.

I think Jim built the same layout four times with different themes. It would kill most of us to build a great looking layout only to give it the axe, (no pun intended here). But, Jim is a restless soul, having been on a sail boat for quite some time so he is used to moving about and getting things done in a grand way.

Well, Jim has finally decided to give some of the house back to his wife Gayle which I'm sure she will appreciate, but I have a hunch Jim won't stay totally out of model trains.

Jim, you keep your head in it ok and do drop in from time to time.

Hi Loren and thanks to you and others for the kind words. 650 trees are now spoken for and you all should get them before ebay does!
My health: Allow me to get the facts out to all those who care to know them. First, I'm not dead yet. Second, I have been seriously ill since last Thanksgiving. The list is long. 1. Arthritis. This is the really bad one. It is the reason I left my post here at ZCS. 2. I hurt my back just before Thanksgiving and couldn't get out of bed for two weeks. 3. I contracted Gout in my left ring toe around Dec. 1st. Talk about pain. 3. I recovered a bit by mid-Dec. Went to do easy hike in the big park across the steet. I lost my balance and fell on my head twisting it sideways toward the left. Result? Whiplash. Still not healed, though much better. Could not move my head from side to side for two months. 4. Contracted Gout in my left ankle and big toe. Emergency room for pain management. This was in February. 5. Contracted Gout in my right big toe March first. Another trip to the ER for pain management. Basically I have been bedridden since January 1st. I finally got to doctor number six in all this and he figured out a gout teatment plan for me. To sum up, the gout is still troublesome and will be for the rest of this year I'm sure. My back is still killing me as it has for 33 years. Maybe six more months for the neck problem. Lastly, arthritis seems like it is here to stay.
Consequently, Z is finished and my small venture into N scale is finished. I put my N stuff up for sale today. And yes, Gayle will 'probably' get the spare bedroom back. It is only 10'x11' and is probably too small for HO..?

Wag, No problem. But folks, I'm not just trying to sell my trees. This is a chance to get a good deal. I'm making nothing in the long run at these prices. Also, you all may be surprized at how little a space 50 trees or even 100 trees covers. I'm sure Loren will back up these last two statements. That said, 650 trees are spoken for already so get as many as you think you need. Go to a golf shop and by 50 golf tees and see how far they go to get an idea of coverage. Good luck, Jim

Ain't that the truth Jim. Jim and I have made thousands of trees combined and for all our hard work, the trees sure don't cover much real estate.

I have an end module that has a small hill roughly 2' by about 9" wide. It is a steep slope simulating a forested area rising along side a lake...very similar to what you would see in the Mt Shasta area if you are driving I-5. I have over 500 trees in that one area alone.

I am sure Jim will agree with me that we have both felt we were going to go stark raving mad before we built enough trees to populate our landscape.

In looking at Jim's forested area, you will notice that the trees are not real close to each other. In some of my modeling I have trees crowded against each other like you often see in nature.

Want to see them in person?......then come to Sacramento in July to NTS to see where Smokey the Bear has hung his hat many an evening and cranked out tree after tree.

Where I am in the Sierra, the forest service considers 150-200 trees per acre dense. Interestingly, a z scale acre is about a physical square foot (so you math is about right). But at that density you can't see the bottoms of the trees, so don't you only have to make the top half?

Mark, interesting comment regarding 'tree tops only'

I have heard of this technique being used to save materials. I almost did this once, but went ahead and built the whole tree.

Here's the technique.

1. Build just the top portion of the tree leaving the lower portion bare of limbs.

2 Using foam blocks, wood blocks, or anything else you care to use, place the riser blocks every few inches on the mountain surface.

3. Cover the blocks with a wire mesh, This would require a fine mesh, slightly larger than window screen or I suppose you could use window screen and just poke holes where you want the tree trunk to be placed.

4 Push the trunk through the wire mesh and into the surface below. Foam would be the best surface to place the trunks into. Also a dab of Elmer's glue applied to the trunk base would help hold the tree in place once the glue had set up.

Place the trees close together enough to make a dense forested area.

When you approach the edge of the forested area, then switch to normal trees with tree limbs down as far as you want them and place your 'best' looking foreground trees on the edges of the forest.

What this does is save on tree making materials, but since the materials are so cheap to begin with, there isn't much saving.

I have yet to do this technique, but will on any future 'densely' planted area.

Here is the area that has 500+ trees and to the left of the tunnel entrance, is another 150 or so.
