System Jorger Deluxe throttle

I recently purchased a System Jorger Deluxe throttle. Unfortunately, for me, it is not RTR. Does anyone have experience in putting this system together in a hand-held throttle with a 9-volt battery as a power supply?

The statement on the instructions, “Simply add a power supply and reversing switch to create the perfect controller for your layout.” … well, that’s no so simple for me.

Alex, I don't have a Jörger manual in front of me so I have to guess. For the 9V power, I have to assume the usual Red for + (positive) and a Black for - (negative). If you have a 9V battery, there will be marks on top (metal contact end) or sides, near the top. If you go to Akihabra, you can get a classic 9V battery 'clip' the snaps on these contacts and has the Red and Black leads. If the Jörger does not have red and black 9V leads and just holes, they should be marked. If you want to use a 100V to 9V adapter, please try and buy a modern 'switching' design. These are smaller, much lighter types that come with the new phones, MP3 players, etc., not older 'transformer' types that we used 10 years ago. They are not regulated or filtered well enough. The new 'switching' types are.

For the Reversing switch, that goes on the output, to the track. Here, polarity makes no difference. But to let you know, the + output normally goes to the right rail and outer track. But don't worry, that is what the reversing switch takes care of ! Your loco should go forward with + on the right rail. To make a reversing switch, you need a DPDT-CO switch. This means: Double pole, Double Throw, Center off. I will translate: Double pole means 2 wires (your two track or power wires). Double throw means this side or that side. Like a rocker, toggle or slide switch. Got it ? Wakarimasan? You want a Center Off so you can disconnect the track from the Jörger. For a toggle switch, this is straight out.

Do not have pictures currently but later in the day I should have some time to take pictures of my Jorger in a box and what I added to the box for the complete handheld including a unique way to use 4 9v batteries in parallel so you can run for a show weekend and run out of power.

Right now I have to go to work on my bathroom reno project. today is install the tub day.

Here is my Jorger system which uses either battery pack or wall transformer. The wall transformer is 9vac so this is just a stand in for the 9VDC version.

This picture shows the socket for the power in and the kato track power socket for quick connect to any track on my show oval.

In this picture I show the insides of the box.

What Have I added
track direction switch miniature 2 pole 3 way (DP3T) on-off-on (or west-off-east)
RED LED to show you got power to the unit.
Green LEDs to show track power direction these are connected to track power out and the diodes determine which lamp is lit.
There are also holes in the case to allow you to adjust the max voltage on the Jorger and to view the Red LED which gives you the status of the Jorger controller.
Then a female power socket to match the power source male plug.
A wall transformer for 9VDC or a battery pack using 4 9VDC batteries in parallel so you are independent of house power and this will run a pair of MTL loco's for more than 12 hours which is usually enough for a two day show.

All these items came from Radio Shack in the USA. The LED's already have the current limiting resistors with them and I added 1N4001 diodes where I needed to turn lights on in certain polarities such as track power.

For decorating I used letraset and coated the cover with dullcoat to seal the lettraset on the lid.

And here is the picture of the complete system I take to shows. I see in this picture the wall transformer is a 9VAC model so don't make the mistake of using one like this make sure it is a 9vdc type.

I see that you connected 4 9V blocks as a power source. Can you give a hint about the capacity of this setup?

I also have a Jörger DeLuxe, but since one 9V block accu doesn't have to much capacity I was thinking to use 6 AA accus instead. Since this would roughly use about the same space as your 4 9V blocks I'm wondering about which setup has a longer durability.

You must have lots of confidence to connect your power supply straight into the controller circuit without any good size (2200mF?) capacitor to filter it. Or the Joerger controller has one already built in?

The wall transformer I am using is 9VDC 500 ma and it is recovered from a computer modem or hub so the DC is stabilized in the cube. I have had no problem with the two I have and they have seen extensive use at train shows including operating on the Golden Blackhawk and Central City at the last three national train shows plus my local shows. So do not think there is a problem with what I am using. I also use a Radio Shack variable voltage output block when I am running my three F7A+B+A which is rated to 1 amp and you can choose from 3, 4.5, 6. 9, or 12 volts DC from it. I have it set for 9vdc and the Jorger throttle works with that as well without any hiccups.

I can not say how many MA the battery capacity is but I can say that I can run a double headed MTL GP35's with 40 cars and run it for more than 16 hours over two days at a show with out losing any power. It continues to provide power when I am home so I am sure it would cover a three day show as well. The batteries I am using are the cheap ones not the alkaline. I get a box of 10 for about 6 bucks. I suspect if you were using copper tops you would get even longer service and even better recovery overnight. I run at about 4 - 5vdc track voltage.

I made a handheld controller with the joerger deluxe, with this instruction, so I guess most people can...

BTW, was the one page instruction by designer Jeremy Brandon included with your order? I got later on from Jeremy, it is both in english and german and shows wiring etc very clearly.
