What new feature would you add? was created by soccrdad30
Interesting question for you...

By now you have seen how ZCS has been slowly changing, adding some features and cleaning a few things up. But, to really seperate ZCS from the other forums, what new feature(s) should we consider to implement? Are there any cool features in other forums that we should have in ZCS? Do you have an idea of something we could add?

I can't promise that we will add all of the suggested ideas. But, we can take the ideas into consideration and see if they are viable for ZCS.

Ok, features away!

John

1. Home foto section up and running.--
2. "My foto section" accurate and without displaying each foto group
3. As events are past dated - either delete from home page or have them fall off to allow future events to be shown.
4. Allow a series of fotos to be loaded up- the first to home page- the rest to "My pictures"
5.Instructions on specific pages on how to use that specific function-example:
how to load pictures-- another example: how to load picture to chat
some are unaware of lock feature-etc...How to post to library--etc These instructions will become second nature to some- but new members will find this helpful- I still get lost on TB
6.archives reinstated--comments not necessary
I understand that some of these are in the works and may be complex.
Thanks for your efforts.
Fred

How about a "How I do it" section.A place where we can Show & Tell how we personally do things like kitbash buildings or cars or even how we scratchbuild things for our layouts.

John,
I like that idea. I'm sure each one of us has done or are thinking of doing something 'our way'. We would need to be able to link several pictures to the topic so folks could see as well as read the 'how to' Remember, a picture may be worth more than a thousand words.
What think ye?

John- I like the "How to" idea. This might be incoroporated in the library section as a reference source.
An example: on TB there are comments on using Marklin expandable track sections and "tricks" to make them work better, connecting modules. As more members add new threads- these tricks will be lost and finally fall off the front page. I still get lost on TB. Often it's fun and sometimes frustrating.
And- NO - I will not tell anyone how to build a solid wood mountain with switch inside :woohoo:
Fred

This shows my first Z scale layout- coffee table turned "train table" with infamous wooden mountain disquised as Stone Mountain, Georgia. ( upper center)

Don't worry Fred. We'll just ask the cat. They'll give us all you secrets. Oops, you were not supposed to know they were spies, .

The "How To" section is what I personally want to see more than any other feature.

My difficulty is that it's not quite a blog, not quite a forum, and is more than just a gallery of photos. I don't (yet) know what format would be best to try to do it in.

Well, Fred, you got your Holiday wish. :)
Last night I added 2500+ photos to the gallery from an old backup that Brad gave us. It only took a couple of months with the elves working long nights behind the scenes to get it all re-done.

They are all in a category called "Archives". Here is a direct link. It was/is just too complex to also restore the comments with them, and we'd like to solicit everyone's help in identifying faces/places in the pictures.

One side-effect of importing this old gallery is that some of the owner/author tags are incorrect. If you see any that are wrong, please let John or I know so we can fix them. As always, if you see a photo that should be taken down, let us know about that also.

The plan over time is to start re-organizing the categories in the gallery, and the separate "Archives" section will be blended in with the other categories. If anyone would like to step up and volunteer to assist in that effort, we're looking for a couple of victims. :P

I'd also like to extend a challenge to everyone.. Let's see some more pics!

Thank You John and Stony for all your hard work on the web site and also for bringing back the Archive. I have spent alot of time looking thru them in the past and have learned alot from them.
Keep up the great work!

Gee, I see some of my stuff dragged out to the photos sections. Is this from the Archieves? Good work. I didn't know these plans were in existence anymore. I forgot about the Z Climax photo. One of my favorites. Thanks, Jim :)

Happy Holidays Jim! It is always good to have you stop in. Well, we here at ZCS do not refer to it as "dragging out". Instead we call it "presenting". There are images back from 2005 restored! ;) John

John, It is only semantics. I'll agree with presented as a better choice though. I check in at least once a week. Hopefully the new year will bring more participation from members new and old. I've been in and out of the the hospital in the last two weeks and 6 1/2 hours in the ER on Monday. I'm fighting degenerative arthritis in the back and neck and have only two to three degrees side to side movement in my neck. Pain is BAD. I'n still thinking about a diorama for the contest, if I can get my hands under control. Not looking good healthwise. Still takes a minute to put a boxcar on a track, and that is in N scale. Lastly I have barely a clue when Ztrack will publish the Northern Division. I get emails all the time inquiring and I refer them to Rob. Maybe never??? Keep up the good work and Happy New Year to you all. Jim :)
