Stuff for Z was created by SJ-BAZ-man
Lets try and find material, products, anything that can be used in Z for scratch building or just that extra visual effect.

I found this N scale etched brass fence that can easily be used for Z.

From N-Scale Architect (Walthers 716-50045). Etching shown with Z scale figures, MTL flex roadbed for scale compare. Horizonatal rails are 2' apart. Cut the lower section off for a 2' garden/yard fence. Fence boards are 3.4" to 4.8" wide.

Here are some N scale bumpers that I easily cut down to Z. From Walthers Cornerstone Series (933-2602). $11 for 5. Not the I-beam style I wanted but I need a lot for the yard and they are cheap. 3' viewing rule :) Need some appropriate brown paint, tagging, and rust.

A lot of scenic materials can be picked up with a walk in the park.

Well, this is an opportunity to ....not *bash* but just discuss a Z scale product..... the etched sunflowers from Z Track center are awesome but very, very large. They are actually closer in size to HO Busch sunflowers than the TT/N ones! So I will be pulling mine out and using them on my TT layout. I do recommend them as they very nice, but the Busch TT/N ones are significantly smaller.

this is also a chance to ask a question starting to be important for our city module ... anybody know of a material that can suitably serve as chain link fencing in Z?

What is the little screen stuff you speak of?
I was thinking of using pantyhose. I think it would work.

Many people like to use wedding vale material for chain link fencing. Cheers, Jim CCRR:)

The thing I seen was a piece of very fine photo etched screen stuff about 100X50 or so at the show in Cologne. It was too small and Id have to cut it so it is only good for maybe a fence for a house or two..Think it was about 15 Euros. Too little for too much..Is the wedding veil stuff fine enough?

i found this fabric in michaels thats fine and has the diamond pattern.its a ribbon for show,, the only problem was it was plaid!!! hard to paint, fabric. but i did manage to get enough to do about 400 feet of fencing, tho i wasted 2/3rds of it trying to color it. haha. its super cheap, 27 cents a foot, so i didn t mind. i just bought some more this week, i m thinkig of dying it this time. mike

The wedding veil idea sound good. Have to look at that. There are some fine screen materials out there, just need to find other sources.

Lajos posted a pix of some that he good some time ago from Germany.

I just found some stuff in the fabrics section of a craft store..very fine material in a ribbon and it scales out to about 2,40 meters high! Perfect height. No need to cut fabric at all. Trouble is it is weird yellow metallic color. they had it in black too but this will be good for experimenting as 3 meters were like 4 Euros. Another problem is is the "wire" runs up and down and not diagonal, but, while playing with it and kind of pulling the top part of ribbon one way and bottom the other, it puts a diagonal look to it. I just have to pull it that way and glue it on the poles..

OK, time to confess. I have a great supply of this brass mesh, also tons of etched brass components and all kind of weird stuff. The first internet scrapyard will be open soon, next to the zthek store . It will be a bargain source of scratch building supply, brass, plastic, wood, electronics and other junk (I mean treasure). The prices will include shipping, and no minimum to buy. I'll start with a few (25-30?) things, but in a couple of weeks, the scrapyard will be big. More difficult times are ahead, building your own stuff can be the perfect solution to keep Z-scale alive and well.

Here's a few ideas for Z scratch building.
Plastruct makes trusses that can make an easy truss bridge. The for sale sign is an excellent source of cheap styrene for scratch building. The 5 pole fence (Neal's nguaging trains: Walthers 530-037) is an excelent source of Z scale hand rail (when cut in half horizontally).
