June 2014 website update - Part 3 was created by markm
Stony,
Last weekend, I had to access the site on dial-up. had a lot of problems with object creation on the home page and couldn't log in (object rt_loginpopup not available in DOM) While it's probably not worth the effort to fix, since I suspect I'm the only member that has to use dial-up, but the info may help in debugging other issues.

Ohhhh dial-up! :( I feel for you! I finally got DSL a few years ago, it was previously unavailable in my area even though 2 miles away they had it. Nearly every web site needs DSL now. I was getting charged .75 cents every 3 months because I couldn't create an account online for my Health Savings Account, which was total BS! Even though I was talking to the people! Apparently, in order to create an account I had to be talking to them and have use of the internet at the same time. Since I didn't have a cell phone, (yes I know I'm not modern LOL) that was impossible with my land line. Hopefully you can get DSL in your area soon too.

Yeah, I split my time between the SF Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada. In the mountains we have a mom and pop telephone company. They laid the fiber optics a decade ago and they are just starting to install the DSL equipment on it. I may be able to get 512K DSL in the next couple of months. I wanted to try HughsNet, but I found I'd have to run down a couple of 150 ft. pine trees to see the satellite. Oh and did I mention no cell phone service for 20 miles.

Mark.. is the site doing any better now? We've tweaked several things, but it's still pretty graphics intensive.

Stony,
Won't know until Thursday when I go back to the Hooterville Telephone company territory. I'll let you know by the weekend.

Looks great! The other day I checked it out and the homepage main image bled out of the boarder and off to the right quite some bit. It looked intentional and I absolutely loved it! I thought it looked so much better then the centered image did and it seemed to allow for a larger image. But I guess it was not intentional as I have not seen any images do that again... To bad. A lot of things look more appealing and interesting when they are asymmetrical (like just about everything growing in your backyard and in nature in general). It also makes things look less structured (in a good way) and less rigid (unlike just about everything growing in your backyard and in nature in general). That's my two cents...

Oh and I know its impossible to build a website that works with every browser but the "back" button on firefox still needs to be pressed several times before you go back on occasion. Also, it was a crap shoot to post images from firefox on the old website (regardless of size they almost never posted) so I had to log in using Explorer. Is it still the same with the new website?

Nope, still the same problems uploading from firefox. I just tried uploading a 5 meg file and it told me I exceeded the 5,000,000 bytes limit. Shrunk it down to 1.5 megs and it uploaded no problem. Is that supposed to be 5,000 kilobytes and not 5,000,000 kilobytes? Because that would explain why the 5 meg image did not upload.

5,000,000 bytes is 5,000 kilobytes.

or to be more specific..... 5,000,000 bytes is 4882.8 kilobytes and is 4.77 megabytes

It's a computer thing <grin>

And.. the typed in number on the back end is "5000000" so you're limited to 4.77mb

Stony,
I'm on dial-up, can login and everything loads, eventually. It seems that the home page loads as fast or slightly faster than the old site. Tabs, such as this forums definitely load fast.

It's on the home page on the left side under the title "Message Notifier", just above the latest forum posts.

For me, a LOT of wasted space ! Cant' even see a forum post (Recent, like Announcements or Discussions) without going to a link. With most laptops are 768 vertical pixels, better ones at 900 and the 'best' at 1080 nowadays, I just don't get the pages full of 'white space' ! Simple borders, maybe some color shading, can easily separate sections. (Apple's last iOS 7 really pissed me off, especially the Contacts. SOoooo much wasted space !!! Why 4 pages to show what fits on 1 ???). Plus, ZCS does not display on iOS. Need to look at the browser tags.

I really hate scrolling down web pages to see if any new post is there.
