Taking off numbers on MTL engines was created by Kelley
I know its been asked before but I cannot find it. What is the best way to take off a number or marking ,on an MTL engine? I think I remember 90 percent alcohol and a rubber eraser. i think i will drink the alcohol first to get the courage to try it..

Kelly,
You have the right technique, although I'd use a cotton swab and a whole lot of patience. I've found that the ink MTL uses for the numbers is much more resistant to removal than the background paint and I've yet been able to remove the numbers without damaging the surrounding paint. My current thought about renumbering engines revolves around creating decals that fit the entire cab panel.
Good luck.

Thanks. I am going to backdate the CB&Q F-7 by trying to take off the letter A. The engineĀ“s painted off white, and the engine itself is molded in white so we shall see. Numberboards should be an easy fix, and the number on the nose will be covered with a reflective sign with the number.
I will put a drawbar on these and connect with the B unit to make an ABA with the original number on front and back engine.
If I am successfull and I donot screw up the paint, I will try to get a second ABA set, and erase the line in the 8 and make it a 9. I am lucky in the fact that the 3 ABA F7s that the CB&Q had were numbers 167,168,and 169.
Perhaps I could just use White-out and a lot of weathering-
