gear pullers....

im looking for a gear puller for these 2-4-0 steamers,, can anyone tell me what they use?? i ve been teaching myself how to replace my own engines, brushes, and cleaning up of all marklin locos, but theres just one thing that eludes me,, the pulling off of the worm gear on the small units. now there has to be a tool for this procedure? i tried to make a unit that would screw onto the worm, with my lathe, then i made a stainless steel awl that was threaded to push onto the shaft,, i broke off the screw on part, it was just to light. what am i not doing right here, is this a trained secret,, if so email me the help? i m sitting on over 50 units that need pulling,, and sending them out would cost my left leg!!! someone give me a few pointers,, please!! canada mike:woohoo:

I may be wrong, it's been a terribly long time since I've messed around with any Marklin stuff, but I vaguely recall that, on certain locos, the worm was an integral part of the motor shaft, and thus not removable. This may or may not explain your difficulties.

Yes sir, you are correct. "Some" of Marklins newer gear loaded shafts are one piece wonders, while the much older combos are all pieced together. But..... When it comes to the worm gear on the motor shafts, it takes a special type of puller to remove and re-align to maintain Marklin perfection. I am grateful to Lajos Thek for the worm gear puller he has provided me to do the work on all the Marklin 0-6-0 chassis for modification to his SW1 projects.

I too use to make this and that to remove the worm, but nothing ever panned out till he sent me the puller/re-installer.

In the end, it takes a special tool to remove and re-install the motor worms on Marklin equipment.

That would work too! Sounds like alot of modifying to the original puller though. None the less, a nice find.

It is the Re-Installation process that scares me. One off beat of the hammer and the shaft could bend or the worm zip across the room. Those tiny worm gears have disappeared into the black hole under my work bench before! Ugh!!!

HEYYY, A GEAR PULLER!!! thats exactly what i need! thankyou!! i know the newest are single heat treated units now,, but the older ones i ve seen people pulling the worm gears off. another guy i know cuts the motors pin ,, at the brush area, then pulls the 2 pieces out. then replaces the new 5 pole with a new gear,, banged on with a mallet,,i think thats alot of destruction, for one lil motor!! haha. thx all for your help. i know ajckids carrys all motors n brushes, n gears,, for anything im working on. canada mike
