Steel Coils was created by Catt
Hi gang,
Got the CSX decals squared away, now I have another question to ask.
Are any of you aware of any Steel coil loads for Z scale cars? I have a couple gondolas that I would like to load up with scale coil loads.

Jonathan, there is a company that makes coil, but they are very expensive. Bobby Hargis made a couple of coil cars for me, and this is one of them. I think he made them out of styrene. Bobby, I need some more coils for my coil cars.

Smokey Mountain Miniatures imports Z scale coil steel loads. Check out:

smokeymountainminiatures.com/shop/index.htm

I have quite a few samples of the loads they offer. The loads are excellent! Very detailed.

The coils in Johns gon are cut up peices of plastruct tubing painted with testor "steel" color paint. The banding is just a fine point sharpie marker enscribed on the coil. I used 2 cut peices of L bar as the cradle inside the car. I don't remember the sizes of tubing and L bar I used.
Just take your gon to the hobby shop and kind of eyeball what looks like the right size.

You could try cutting thin strips of aluminum tape and rolling it to look like steel coils.

Rolled strips of tin foil could be used for rolls of metal. Shinny side for stainless, dull side for other stuff like aluminum.

Latest issue of Model Railroader has an article on rolling your own steel coils. I'll be giving it a go when I get the time.
