Hi Gang -

I've been more than a little quiet on this (and other) forums of late, for a reason: my father, Roy, died last Saturday (11/14) at the age of 85. He was, among other things, an old-fashioned newspaper photographer, with technical skills his colleagues envied, and an artistic flair. He flourished in the days before digital photography, making some of the photographs he made all the more impressive. That's one transition.

A second transition is illustrated among the photographs that his former employer, The Seattle Times, posted online to accompany his obituary. The tenth photo in the album shows "the 1714" being watered at Woodinville, WA. Given the location, I assume the line is the Northern Pacific. Taken in 1951, this puts it in the middle of the steam-to-diesel era.

The specific photo is this one .

His obituary is here .

If you're on Facebook, I can point you to my sister-in-law's photo album of other (non-railroading) photos of Dad's work, family photos, and some photos of Dad. (Some of you flier-types will enjoy the several Blue Angels photos.)

Mike, Well, this is sad news. I'm from Seattle and possibly I've seen your father's photos. Many of us have lost someone close, and while the pain and sorrow will eventually lesson, it is never easy. Be of good cheer, mourn as you will and take solice that your friends here are beside you and await your return and participation on regular basis. Cheers, Jim CCRR

My deepest sympathy to you and your family with the passing of your father. The photos of your father's are truely memorable. Being a member of the old school myself with photography, I really enjoyed his black and white work. He really knew how to tell a story thru his photos.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Mike, I am sorry to hear about your father. The photo you shared is beautiful. Your Dad definitely had an eye for a scene. My best to you and your family.
