Waiting for snow in the South.

Well, all the bread and the milk is off the shelves, schools are already starting to close for tomorrow and I am praying that when I get up tomorrow that all I see is the white stuff, snow is a four letter word here, so I can go back to sleep and then concentrate on making a new layout. To all my fellow members in the Carolinas, brace yourselves for the fun to begin in our area of the country.

Goob, Last time in snowed in San Diego was 1967 for about two hours. Just enough time for the locals to start saying their prayers because the end of the world was at hand! Snow before that year isn't even spoken about in indian folk lore. Only 83 degrees here today. Nice enough to get the layout to Iowa out for more pictures. Cheers, Jim CCRR:laugh:

We don't have the shake, rattle, & roll here unless its on the jukebox, . But, the last snow we got here caused a gridlock that had people taking 6 hrs to go about 2 miles. Either way, my Yankee blood tells me, not to go out unless its a short trip. Too many people with 4wd here and that makes them think they can still go the speed limit. Still it'll be good to see some snow, its been a while.

It's here and its looks like a winter wonderland. We have about 6 incs here. Now in about 2 months it'll be 75 degrees and the typical southern weather that has been here.

Seems like a lot of the country is getting it's share of the snow. Ours was a white Christmas. Enjoy your snowed in time working on your layout, have fun.

Free snow for all! Here in Labrador City, Labrador, Canada snow covers the ground nine months of the year, It is not unusual to see snow piled up on lawns 25 feet in height. Temperatures here have been about -40C with windchills of up to -54C the past few days. Needless to say a sheet of crumpled white paper would serve well as a diorama hehe. Happy sleding folks! Jim does like to rub in the great weather in SD but, that's just too much snow for me granted you are really in the frozen tundra of the north. A good idea though for a diorama would be using white foam and carving out the lines so that it looks as though a blower carved it out and the tops of signals just poking through the top. The snow has melted hear and it'll start warming up soon. Jim, sorry for the Chargers, I went to the same school as Rivers. But, I can say GO STEELERS!!!!.

Well I lived in Philadelphia for 31 years and just south of Boston for 22 years, so I do miss the 80F weather but the beauty of the wilderness here is absolutely breathtaking. As I learn how to use this site I will be more then willing to share pictures. I wish to be a contributing member but still getting my feet wet. Not quite sure where to begin but having fun seeing all the wonderful things you guys have done. Thanks for the reply.

The year before I moved up here in 1978, they lost a train in a snow drift on the north line from Inverness to Wick/Thurso. A couple of years later the same happened on the Kyle of Lochalsh line near Achnasheen. (When I say lost, I mean that no-one not on the trains knew where they were — now we have radio comms.

A few years ago, my wife was taken seriously ill for some 10 months. I travelled to Inverness from Skye at least once a week and not once did I see more than a thin covering of snow. There has been some snow this year but not much at all. The weather is really changing here.

We were in London in late October, where it wasn't too cold at all. That is until we came out of the theatre one night and it was snowing! A couple of days later we went to Cambridge (by train of course!) and there was still a thin covering in the fields beside the tracks. Of course it doesn't snow here in Sydney but it is hot at the moment

Our weather is typically much like TerryH's, only we're not close to a coastline in landlocked Alberta as Terry is.

Snow is great at this time of year, but Thursday it warmed up to about 40 F and rained hard for a couple of hours at suppertime. Now that might sound like a great idea - a brief respite from the cold - but it created a slick ice sheet over every road and sidewalk. I'm sure many cars that were parked outdoors overnight might have had their car doors frozen shut.

Dear husband Chris made it to the bottom of our outdoor front stairs taht everning, only to slip at the bottom. He fell hard and smacked the back of his head. I heard him fall all the way in our townhouse and went out to see what had happened. He got up and was holding his head which bled profusely. Luckily, the cut was only 2" long and the paramedics were able to clean it up a bit and bandaged his head before taking him to the ER. He was there for 4 hours and said there were people coming in with all kinds of broken limbs from falls on the ice.

When unusual weather hits, it might seem funny to people in places who typically don't have snow or don't have warm winters, but, believe me it's not a joking matter. If Chris had fallen just a couple of inches differently, his head would have hit the bottom stair instead of the flat bottom landing. He might be in a coma as I type instead of hurting all over and being a little grumpy.

Beverly, Sorry to hear about Chris. Tell him to stay indoors and take up Z scale. We have more than one couple that enjoy Z together. Oh, and be sure to tell him it is going to be 82/27 degrees here in Santee today! I'm sure that will cheer him up. Cheers, Jim CCRR:unsure:

Sorry to hear about Chris. We are expecting the weather here to do the same this week, going up to 2C. Fortunately, here snow doesn't melt, it evaporates, so we rarely get bad icing conditions. I must agree with Jim, he should take up model railroading, look at all the fun we are having I hope everything is ok and you guys don't get a big melt.

Glad to hear he is OK Bev. Ice is no joke, we get it here in the South and nobody messes with it nor tries to go out with it. Have him take up the hobby with you and then you can get that grumpiness to turn into hapiness.

Thanks for the words of hope, everyone. For the most part, Chris is okay but he's still got a headache and some kind of not-quite-right thing going on in his thinking process. Oh, some of the not-right-in-his-thinking is quite normal for him, but this is something else. He's having it checked this afternoon. It may be nothing, but with a good whack on the head the brain can be affected.

Actually, we are working together on our new Z scale train. It arrived the day he slipped on the ice which meant I had to set it up myself. The train set is a Marklin 8188 with tank locomotive and caboose, oval track and 9 vold battery power pack. I opened the package and Chris was so excited that took locomotive and caboose out to look at them. He keeps telling me he has no interest in trains. But when I ask him if the train is cute, he says it's cute. He's working on the electronics side (and possible computer side) of the layout and I'm working on design and putting the layout together. I don't think he'll ever much of a train person. I don't think I will either for that matter, at least not in the ways many of the people on this board are.

The weather in many places seems to be pretty wonky this winter. Keep safe, everyone
