Have you won a hidden treasure? was created by soccrdad30
Like most modelers I keep an eye on Ebay for 'projects', hard to find's, and of course, the good deals. I always keep an eye out for n scale decal, styrene, balsa, scenery, or paint lots. Many years ago I won a 80+ Pollyscale paint lot with many brushes. About 15 or so of the bottles were opened but not a bad deal for 25.00 plus 30.00 for shipping. LOL, yep shipping costed more than the paints, but I still got a great deal!

Okay, a few weeks ago there was a few Ebay auctions, the first one had 5 woodside boxcars and the second auction had 3 tank cars glued on flat cars. The pictures were fuzzy, and I won the two auctions with the opening bids. :) After recieving the cars, I noticed a difference to the typical MTL productions. These appear to be Nelson Gray freight cars, but it is interesting about the flat cars with the tanks glued on them with the metal planted end rails.

Do you have a story or photos to share? I will have a few more hidden treasure items to share.

John

John, Those glued on tanks could be the start of fire fighting tank cars. We have one here in Medford that I can send you a picture of. With some crashing and bashing you could make these look pretty good.

The screws used to hold the trucks and Marklin couplers on the care are a dead give away to identify these are Nelson Grey originals. I have a pretty good fleet of them though over the years I have had to change out the trucks as with a lot of running the axle ends wear out. If you don't let them go too long you can install FVM metal wheels and that will give you a considerable extension on their life, but take care - as the trucks age they have tendency to crack at the bolster hole in the truck.

Call me Sherlock Holmes. I think the giveaway to whose cars these are is that Gray is imprinted on the bottom. Sorry. Jim

Earlier this week I sent the seller an email asking for some history on the items. I hope to hear something by the end of this week. Thank you for the information, it is very cool to have a part of Z history. John

If you ever decide to change out the Nelson Gray trucks for something else, let me know, I'll buy them from you.
