Marklin 4-6-2 tender pick up? was created by eruby79
I am thinking about trying to add tender pick up to my marklin 4-6-2. Can anyone point me to a "how to for dummies"? I finally got the engine running fairly well but it still stalls a little too often for my liking. I was hoping adding tender pickup would help with the stalls. However, I dont want to ruin the engine either.

If you're primarily interested in the loco electromechanical, checkout a piece Jeff did a while back:

While the post is about adding DCC, he posts some details about the loco electrical.
If you're interested in the electrification of the tender, I've done that for a Mikado tender and can comment.

Thanks for the link. I was looking for a way to have the wheels on the tender pick up power from the rails as well as the drive wheels on the loco. I know that I will have to run a 2 wires from the tender to the motor somehow but I cant figure out how to do this.
So I guess I'm interested in the "electrification of the tender"???

When I electrified my Mikado tender, I wanted to install a back-up light, and like you possibly improve the loco performance, and with a thought for DCC. I also wanted to upgrade to MTL trucks and coupler. If you want to stay with Marklin hardware the process is easier. Details are at: www.zscale.org/articles/power.html which was my orginal inspiration.
So I removed the shell, and pried off the Marklin trucks. Installed the Zelatory adapter, which repositions the trucks and provides bolster pin holes. Then need to drill through the adapter's bolster pin holes through the tender frame. You'll probably hit the weight in the bottom. Drill into the weight just enough to mark the bolster locations. remove the weight and drill through with about a 1/8" drill and reinstall. Using one each of coupler and non-coupler trucks, remove the wheels. install the wiper holding it in place with the screw that replaces the bolster pin. Install metal wheels, making sure the electrical wheel is on the same size on each truck and different between trucks. Install the trucks using the screw and making sure the screws don't short out to the metal weight. Connect wires to the screws.
I'm not sure it makes a difference, but I installed the wheels so that the front-back power polarity was the same as the loco.
Finally, a separate thought. Do you know if your loco is using a 3- or 5-pole motor (usually the 3-pole have a 4 digit Marklin number). I have both and found the 5-pole has less of a problem with stalls.

I have a 5-pole version. It runs very well for a while and then it decides to stop and requires constant nudging. Sometimes a gentle push straight down onto the track gets it running again.
