Z Scale TOFC

Z Scale TOFC was created by RRAY
TOFC late 50's style:

What's This? Trailer on a Flat Car? In Z?

UP Retrofit some F-50-10 52'8" flatcars for TOFC service in 1959. Many other railroads retrofit some of their flatcars for TOFC too.

They added deck side rails, car to car drop down ramps, lowerable or removable brakewheels, and the fifth wheel hitchs.

This makes for an interesting mod for our flatcars. This flatcar is a new 62'8" UP "Road Of The Streamliner" slogan flatcar for Jeffrey White, with the TOFC mods attached.

The hitch can be built in the raised or lowered position, with the raised position .2" high and lowered being .050" off the deck.

The trailer is a sample of Dan Stirpe's new model, and you can see the proportions are perfect for this Z Scale cars.

Robert- Thanks for posting. Wonderful pictures-- The shadows really stand out. I like your buildings and scenic touches. And of course your flat car conversion is great!!

Robert,

I think Kalambach had a side or top photo of the early hitch , or at least a photo from 30-40 years ago, in their "Intermodal Operations" book they published 10+ years ago. Not sure, but I would check, but my book is 17 hours drive from me right now!

I do recall reading about putting an air impact to the hitch to raise them.

Anyone out there have the Intermodal Operations book on hand to check on the hitches???

Doesn't matter, the hitches look fantastic!!!

Hobo Tim :)

Robert,

Great pictures, what kind of camera do you use? Do you a special lens?

Thanks for the kind words. The car is one of my kits, and the hitch, is one i'm making into a kit for those that want them.

I just used an old 4M Pixel camera in sunlight, as even a cell phone camera pic looks good in sunlight.
