Yes... the new round-table with round-house and maintenance building is quite nice. But, I think Kelley is more interested in the UP E-8 and the SP E-9, on page 203. (the numbers are on the bottom of the pages, not at the top of the Adobe reader).

Rough translation for the Marklin SP E-9 is...

Marklin 88628 - U.S. diesel-electric locomotive E9A

Prototype: 6-axle A-unit, type General Motors EMD E9A the American Railway Company Southern Pacific.

Model: Completely new tooling. New high-performance motor, 2 axles powered on each of the two bogies, traction tires, resulting in high traction. Warm White LED headlights. Fine detail, elaborate prototypical paint scheme and lettering. Märklin system coupling front and rear. Operation number 6049th. Length over the buffers approximately 96 mm. This model was created in collaboration with the company AZL.

Ok, for those that know a lot more about such things......do you think this is going to be a good runner for Marklin and have the overall looks prototypical accurate?

Do you think we will be able to retro fit knuckle couplers on it like we can for the other Marklin locos and rolling stock?

Price looks about right for a good new addition to Z.

Those are good questions. With Märklin engines you had to do some surgery to change out the couplers. And they take a lot of liberty on their proportions, but I realize that was to accommodate slapping an shell on a German frame. If these are all new from the ground up, I am guessing that would not be a problem.

I know that Märklin had been CB&Q friendly in the past, (I got that set, need about 3 more to almost make a set ;)

The E8s/E9s will be all AZL. Motor, chassis, shell, etc. The only part not AZL will be the coupler.

AZL will be releasing additional E8s/E9s here in the US under their brand. Expect to see new road names and slightly different versions from those being offered by Marklin.

All and all, quite the partnership!

If the Marklin units are new from the ground up, hopefully they've made it easier to convert the coupler. It would be a big sales factor in the U.S.

As I recall, Rob has a couple of the Zephyr sets on the resale site if you really want to increase your roster.

I don't thik that Märklin is on that way. They still focused on German Market and don't believe that they have a big knowleg of the US effords. Märlkin is sill an old traditioal German company and not very custom orientated. So better you take care of that. Mid be the old problems for changing the couplers also in the future. :(

Really all Marklin needs to do is change the coupler pocket so that you can open and close it. They could be using the pocket AZL designed and is already using.

I realize that Marklin has been a traditional German company, but their cooperation with AZL says to me they're thinking in nontraditional ways. AZL has demonstrated the U.S. market is quite large, for the right product.

Whether the coupler issue will be major or minor remains to be seen, but still the prototypical appearance is critical I feel. Rob do you know more about the appearance? Guess MTL loses again.

Mark you mid be right. But trust me. Märklin is still a old fashion German Compny from Schwaben. Zhey think what they do is the best and really don't care the sorry small US market needs. I think that's for sure.

My first thought was MTL sold their E3 work, an AZL mechanism, and a Marklin coupler! :laugh:

Actually I'm really pleased to see Marklin addressing the U.S. prototypes even if it's still directed to the European market. I still remember the days when I'd wait for the new catalog to see what color they were painting the F7 that year. Two locomotives in a year, both in paint that I want, is progress to me.

Maybe we should start dropping hints to Marklin (like bringing back the Budd passenger cars to match the 2014 release engines) for the 2015 catalog?

Just wondering... 99% of the locos will be AZL, with Marklin only contributing the couplings... - could it be that this is not Marklin going for the US market but rather AZL trying to get a foothold in the European one through Marklin... B)

On the other hand it really does look like something only Marklin could come up with - given those couplers, what on earth are these locos going to pull straight out of the box and the Marklin rolling stock assortment ???

The AZL E9s are good news. The Marklin incarnation is simply... destined to be put in a display case, I guess. Which is where Marklin locos run best, of course :laugh:

So no reason to worry about the couplers, and I assume AZL will be slightly cheaper too just due to the fx rate
