OUTSTANDING!!! A total first in Z scale! Well done. A few questions:
1. What trucks and couplers does it use or is it made to fit over another already produced Z scale car?
2. Does it come with hooks for the end of the crane?
3. Will it come with the cables or instructions on how to connect cables even if they are static?
Yours,
John

There are bolsters built in such that you can use standard MTL trucks - without couplers.
Both hooks are included.. they're attached to sprues on the front porch of the crane.
It's up to you to add cable (thread) to the pulleys. Use your imagination as to how you want them wired up.
If I got all the tolerances correct, the cab will rotate, and the boom will pivot up/down. The pulley arms for the cables should also be able to change angles so that you can pick the angle of the arm you want. The main gears and cable spools are decorative only.. they do NOT operate.
I also removed the boiler inside the back room of the cab. You couldn't really see it in there anyway, and it leaves extra room in there for you to add some lead for counterbalance weight if the thing has a tenancy to tip over.
I am open to suggestions as to what to do for couplers. The MTL 905 coupler is just so huge that it'll take up half of the base.. I'd like another option.
A bit of history: I first started working on this model back in May of 2011 - I had the coarse body worked out, and I was trying to figure out what to do to make the pulleys look right. Then, the next week, FUD came out and resolved the issue. The biggest challenge was finding proto photos that gave me enough views at the right angle to be able to create something that looked right.

I tried to (mostly) follow this for the prototype:

For those who actually want to run the car, wouldn´t you be putting it in the middle of a work train so you wont really see the ends?
For those who want to super detail this car (adding BLMA grab irons , lights, horns rigging and other thingies) it would be easy to add the end skirts, as they are flat and can be made out of real thin polystyrene or wood or paper. I do not know how much room you have on the end and middle for the stabilizing I beams, but I would rather see a rectangular hole so I could perhaps slip in a tiny brass I beam..
Perhaps you could make different version? One that is static and detailed, and one that would use MTL or other wheels and coupler?
People who buy this car must realize it is coming from Shapeways and will not have rigging, thread, decals, couplers, wheels, paint, ect ect. Perhaps this is a start of another cottage industry where a 3rd party could super-detail them and sell them ready to run?
But for 16 Euro, its a good deal, that is not much more than what it would cost me for a funky little caboose.

And NSM has just the flat deck barge that you could put that crane on! They're currently available at Zscalemonster: www.zscalemonster.com/nansenstreetmodels/nsm-053.jpg :woohoo:

Outstanding! What did you use for the cables? I was planning on using human hair.
